How to fix a mistake in your credit report, step by step

Short answer: Raise a dispute (a formal complaint about wrong data) with the credit bureau that shows the error. On the same day, write to the lender too, because the bureau can only change data after the lender confirms it. It’s free. The lender has 21 days and the whole process 30 days. After that you’re owed ₹100 a day in compensation, and you can go to the RBI Ombudsman. Disputes are for errors only: accurate negative entries can’t be removed.

The situation

Farhan’s home-loan application was rejected. His credit report shows a personal loan he closed in 2024 as still “active”, with money owing.

Common errors

  • Wrong personal details (name, date of birth, address)
  • An account that isn’t yours, which could be identity theft (someone borrowing in your name)
  • Wrong status, such as a closed loan shown as active
  • Wrong amount or late-payment record
  • Duplicate accounts
  • An enquiry (a lender checking your report) that you never made

Step by step

  1. Get your report from the bureau that shows the error. You get one free full report a year from each of the four bureaus. Note the report or control number.
  2. Name the error, using the list above.
  3. Collect proof: a closure letter or NOC (No Objection Certificate), payment receipts, bank statements or a settlement letter. For identity theft, add your police or cybercrime complaint.
  4. Raise the dispute with the bureau online, and write to the lender’s grievance officer (the person who handles complaints) on the same day.
  5. Write down the date. By day 21 the lender should send corrections. By day 30 the matter should be closed.
  6. Not fixed, or rejected without a good reason? Take it higher within the bureau, to its nodal officer (the senior person for complaints). After that, go to the RBI Ombudsman, the RBI’s free complaint service, which also covers credit bureaus. Claim your ₹100/day compensation. Give your bank account or UPI ID in the dispute form, so it can be paid.
  7. Check the other three bureaus. Each keeps its own copy of your data.

How to dispute with each bureau

Bureau How
TransUnion CIBIL Log in on CIBIL’s website → Credit Report → “Raise a Dispute”. The item is marked “Under Dispute”
Experian Online dispute page (needs your Experian report number and the transaction ID from Experian’s email), or log in → “Dispute”
Equifax Online dispute form, email or toll-free line (details on Equifax India’s grievance page)
CRIF High Mark Online “Dispute Origination System”: log in → My Report → raise a query

Contact details change, so use each bureau’s official website.

A date example

Fictional. Calculated by Paisavy.

Farhan disputes on 10 Nov 2026:

  • The lender’s 21 days end: 1 Dec 2026
  • The 30-day window ends: 10 Dec 2026
  • The corrected report is sent to him on 25 Dec 2026, 45 days after he complained
  • Days beyond 30: 15, so 15 × ₹100 = ₹1,500 compensation

If it’s a loan you never took

  1. Raise an ownership dispute with every bureau that shows it.
  2. Write to the lender and ask for the KYC papers (the ID documents used to open the loan) and the loan documents.
  3. File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in, or call 1930 if money is being taken.
  4. If the lender doesn’t fix it, complain to the RBI Ombudsman.

Don’t pay a loan you didn’t take.

Myths

  • “Only a paid credit-repair agency can fix errors.” The dispute route is free.
  • “The bureau will just delete it.” The bureau needs the lender’s confirmation, so complain to both.
  • “Accurate late payments can be removed.” No. Disputes are for errors only.

What to check today

  1. Download one free report and check every account and enquiry.
  2. Collect closure letters or NOCs for loans you’ve closed.
  3. If you find an error, start the dispute today and set reminders for day 21 and day 30.

Frequently asked questions

How do I correct a mistake in my CIBIL report?

Raise a dispute (a formal complaint about wrong data) with the credit bureau that shows the error. On the same day, write to the lender's grievance officer too. The bureau can change data only after the lender confirms it. Attach proof, such as a closure letter, NOC or payment receipts. Contact details change, so use each bureau's official website.

How long does a credit report correction take?

The lender has 21 days to send corrections, and the whole process should take no more than 30 days. After that, whoever caused the delay owes you ₹100 a day in compensation. Write down the date you raised the dispute and set reminders for day 21 and day 30. Give your bank account or UPI ID in the form, so compensation can be paid.

Do I have to pay to fix errors in my credit report?

No. Raising a dispute is free, and you don't need a paid credit-repair agency. You also get one free full report a year from each of the four bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Each bureau keeps its own copy of your data. After one fixes an error, check the other three.

There is a loan in my credit report that I never took. What should I do?

Don't pay a loan you didn't take. Raise an ownership dispute with every bureau that shows it. Write to the lender and ask for the KYC papers (the ID documents used to open the loan). File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in, or call 1930 if money is being taken. If the lender doesn't fix it, complain to the RBI Ombudsman.

Can I remove late payments from my credit report?

Only if they are wrong. Disputes are for errors, so accurate late payments can't be removed. If a payment was marked late by mistake, dispute it and send proof, such as bank statements or receipts. For accurate entries, paying every EMI and card bill on time from now on is what builds your record. See Credit score basics.

What if the credit bureau rejects my dispute?

If it was rejected without a good reason, take it higher within the bureau, to its nodal officer (the senior person for complaints). If you are still not satisfied, go to the RBI Ombudsman. This free RBI complaint service also covers credit bureaus. A rejected request must come with a reason. Complaint dates shows when you can go to the Ombudsman.
