Amounts are rounded to the paisa; the parts always add up to the total. Cess, reverse charge and input tax credit aren't covered.

How we calculate this
Add GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100; total = price + GST
Remove GST: price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); GST = total − price
CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2 (an odd paisa goes to CGST) · IGST = GST

How to read your GST result

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the tax added to the price of many goods and services in India. This calculator does two jobs. It adds GST to a price, or it takes GST out of a price that already includes it. You type the rate yourself.

What the numbers mean

Price before GST is the base price, the amount the seller charges before tax.

GST is the tax in rupees, at the rate you entered. The small line under it repeats that rate, so you can check you typed the right one.

Price with GST is the base price plus the tax. This is usually what you see on a bill or price tag.

If you pick a split, a small table appears under the three numbers. For a sale within one state, GST is shown as two equal halves: CGST (the central part) and SGST (the state part). For a sale between states, the whole tax is shown as IGST (integrated GST). We round each part to the paisa. When the tax has an odd paisa, one half gets the extra paisa, so the two parts always add up to the total GST.

Worked example

The page opens with a fictional price of ₹1,000 and a rate of 18%. This 18% is only a starting value. It doesn’t mean your item is taxed at 18%.

Result Value
Price before GST ₹1,000.00
GST ₹180.00
Price with GST ₹1,180.00
Split within one state CGST ₹90.00 + SGST ₹90.00
Split between states IGST ₹180.00

Now tap “Price with GST”. The field changes to ₹1,180, and the three numbers stay the same. Taking GST out of ₹1,180 brings you back to ₹1,000.

A common mistake is to take 18% of the full bill. Say a bill of ₹1,000 already includes 18% GST. The tax inside it is ₹152.54, not ₹180. The base price is ₹847.46. To get these numbers, the tool divides ₹1,000 by 1.18. It doesn’t take 18% off the top.

What this tool doesn’t do

It doesn’t know which rate applies to your goods or service, and it doesn’t guess from the item’s name. Check the rate on your invoice or ask the seller. For a business question, a tax adviser can help. It also doesn’t decide whether a sale is within one state or between states; you choose the split. Some parts of GST are left out. These are cess, reverse charge (when the buyer pays the tax instead of the seller) and UTGST (the version used in union territories). Input tax credit, when a business claims back GST it has paid, is also not covered. Invoices with several items at different rates need one calculation per item. The tool doesn’t check HSN or SAC codes, which are the code numbers for goods and services on an invoice. It doesn’t file returns either.

For loans, GST works differently. It can apply to a processing fee, and on credit cards to the interest too. The No-cost EMI tool handles that case.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the GST inside a price that already includes it?

Divide the full price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 18%, divide by 1.18. So ₹1,180 becomes a base price of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. Don't take 18% of the full price: a ₹1,000 bill at 18% holds ₹152.54 of GST, not ₹180. Pick "Price with GST" on the page and it does this for you.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

They are parts of the same GST. When a sale happens within one state, the tax splits into two equal halves: CGST is the central part and SGST is the state part. When goods or services cross state lines, the whole tax is IGST (integrated GST). The total is the same either way. On this page you pick the split; we don't work it out from the item or the address.

Which GST rate applies to my item or service?

We don't say, because the rate depends on the exact item, and rates can change. Check the rate printed on your invoice or ask the seller. You can also look it up in the official rate tables on the CBIC GST website (cbic-gst.gov.in). For anything complex, ask a tax adviser. The 18% the page opens with is only a sample, not a rate for any item.

Is GST charged on my loan EMI?

Usually not on the interest of an ordinary loan, but it can still show up. Credit cards charge 18% GST on the interest part of each EMI, and you don't get it back. Processing fees on loans also carry 18% GST. To see what this adds to a card EMI deal, use the No-cost EMI tool.

Why is my bill different from the calculator by a paisa or two?

It comes down to rounding. We round each amount to the paisa, and the CGST and SGST halves always add up to the total GST. A seller may round each line of a bill separately, or round the whole bill to the nearest rupee. Your tax invoice is the final word. Cess, reverse charge and input tax credit (GST a business claims back) are not covered here.
